E-cloud Hall » [CCPA 2025 Belt and Road Initiative Recommended List] High-Strength Lightweight Coal Gangue Ceramsite

Introduction

To better support enterprises in China’s concrete and cement-based products industry in “going global,” the China Concrete and Cement-based Products Association (CCPA) launched the Recommended List of Key Products, Equipment and Technical Services for “The Belt and Road” in 2020. Since its inception, five editions of the List have been released. Inclusion in the List enables high-quality offerings to be promoted through CCPA’s international cooperation and exchange platforms, gaining widespread attention and favorable responses in Belt and Road countries and global markets. Some projects have already entered substantive stages of cooperation.

The fifth edition of the List was released in September 2025. CCPA is now launching a promotional campaign for the selected enterprises, products, equipment, and technologies through its official website and WeChat public account.

Product Introduction

(I) High-Performance Sintered Lightweight Aggregate

Dongchen’s high-performance sintered lightweight aggregate provides a complete range of coarse and fine aggregate specifications. It is widely used in high-performance concrete (HPC), ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), bridge engineering, building construction, municipal infrastructure, and architectural decorative applications.

For lightweight concrete production, the company offers functional lightweight concrete (LC30–LC50) for general building applications requiring reduced structural weight, thermal insulation, and sound insulation. The company also produces high-performance lightweight concrete (LC60–LC100) and lightweight ultra-high-performance concrete (LUHPC>100MPa), designed for high-rise buildings, long-span structures, and other projects demanding exceptional structural performance.

Compared with conventional concrete of equivalent strength, lightweight concrete produced with high-performance sintered lightweight aggregate reduces structural dead load by approximately 15%–30%. This reduction decreases foundation loads, lowers reinforcement and foundation material consumption, and integrates structural performance with thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, and fire resistance. Its thermal insulation performance is approximately five times that of conventional concrete. The concrete achieves a permeability resistance rating of P10 and an A1 fire-resistance classification, providing excellent overall engineering performance.

The product serves as a replacement for conventional construction aggregates such as natural sand and crushed stone. It also offers a sustainable alternative to shale ceramsite, whose production relies on quarrying that causes ecological damage. The market is gradually moving toward the use of new materials.

(II) Biomass Filter Media

The biomass filter media is manufactured primarily from coal gangue through Dongchen’s proprietary high-temperature sintering technology. The production process avoids environmentally destructive practices such as quarrying and river sand extraction, thereby contributing to ecological conservation. Compared with similar products, it offers higher mechanical strength, superior corrosion resistance, stable performance, and greater cost effectiveness. The product is widely used in biological aerated filters at newly constructed, upgraded, and expanded wastewater treatment plants. It is also suitable for constructed wetlands, where it effectively removes ammonia, nitrogen, total phosphorus, COD, and other contaminants through sedimentation, adsorption, biodegradation, and photosynthesis. In addition, it provides nutrients that support the growth of wetland vegetation.

(III) Low-Carbon Cementitious Material: Soil Stabilizer

The hardening mechanism of Dongchen’s low-carbon cementitious soil stabilizer is based on a series of complex chemical reactions. After being mixed with soil, its active components react with soil particles to generate cementitious compounds that bind the particles together, thereby improving soil strength and structural stability. The product serves as an alternative to lime and low-grade cement for soil reinforcement. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including highway embankment backfilling, shallow and deep soft ground improvement, sludge stabilization, and reinforcement of various soil types such as loess, sandy soils, cohesive soils, and saline soils.

Compared with conventional cement and lime, this low-carbon cementitious material reduces material costs by approximately 30% while shortening construction periods by around one-third. Its manufacturing process requires less energy and generates significantly lower carbon emissions, offering substantial environmental benefits.

The material possesses distinctive physical and chemical properties. Its setting time can be adjusted according to project requirements, allowing for rapid early strength development and high long-term strength. It also provides excellent durability and impermeability, contributing to improved engineering quality and service life.

As an innovative construction material, the low-carbon cementitious soil stabilizer aligns with the industry’s transition toward low-carbon development. It provides an effective solution for both industrial solid waste utilization and sustainable construction materials, making it an important innovation within the building materials sector.

Project Highlights

(I) Wuhan Great River Center Supertall Project

—Setting a New National Record for Single-Stage Pumping of All-Lightweight Aggregate Concrete

The Great River Center, with a total height of 386.6 m, is a benchmark riverfront supertall mixed-use complex in Central China. During construction, adjustments to the building’s functional layout required the uppermost nine floors to be converted from office space to hotel use, with the addition of a swimming pool and densely arranged partition walls. As a result, the loads on the upper structure increased significantly, and the original structural system could no longer satisfy the required safety standards. Owing to the construction constraints associated with a supertall building, conventional vertical structural strengthening solutions were not feasible. Therefore, reducing the building’s self-weight while ensuring structural safety became a key technical challenge for the project.

To address this technical challenge, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd. (ECADI), which was responsible for the revised design, proposed an innovative solution. Coal gangue ceramsite all-lightweight aggregate concrete with a design strength of LC35 and an oven-dry density of 1,650 kg/m³ was specified for the floor slabs from Levels 72 to 80. Compared with conventional concrete of the same strength, this concrete reduced structural self-weight by approximately one-third while fully meeting the structural load-bearing requirements. In addition, owing to the internal curing effect of the lightweight aggregate, the concrete exhibits high strength, excellent dimensional stability, and superior crack resistance. The reduced self-weight provided a higher level of structural safety and successfully resolved the increased loading resulting from the building’s functional modification.
